Improve Your Vision – Exercise Those Eyes

Since the widespread adoption of the personal computer, never before has eyestrain been so prevalent. Staring at a computer for hours on end creates a situation where eyes blink less and vision distance rarely changes. Eye exercises can minimize the eyestrain found in those who use computers the most.

When you sit around the house and avoid exercising your body, the body’s muscles lose tone and become less flexible. The same is true with your eyes. Many eye problems encountered later in life are due to loss of muscle tone in the eyes. When eye muscles become more rigid and lose their elasticity, the eyes have difficulty focusing at a variety of distances and eyesight becomes weaker.

Basic Eye Exercises

Doing these exercises regularly, versus for an extended period will be most helpful. Fitting in some eye exercises each day is quite easy, if you think of the small amount of time you waste waiting for a computer file to download. Instead of staring at the computer next, time, post a note around your computer area that reminds you to take a few seconds to perform these eye exercises. At the end of the day, your eyestrain should be reduced after performing these simple tasks:

1. Take short breaks away from the computer screen by staring out a window to give your eyes a chance to practice distance vision.
2. Blink the eyes several times.
3. Close your eyes and put your palms over them to rest your eyes.
4. Spread your fingers wide and hold them at computer distance from your face. Then, focus on one finger, then at a distance between your fingers, then back at the finger again. This exercise can keep your focusing more fluid as you age.

Eye Problems Affect More Than Vision

Due to the eyes’ unique connection to the brain through the optic nerve, any tension or strain in the eye can also produce those same results in the body. As the eye tension increases nerve impulses in the eye muscles, the optic nerve sends these increased nerve impulses to the brain causing a general feeling of tension and anxiety.

Eye Problems Created by Rigid Muscles

As we age, our eyes naturally become less flexible, just like the muscles in our body. This phenomenon sets up vision problems that we must all face, like presbyopia – the condition where close vision is no longer possible without vision correction. As we hit our 40s, those changes will necessitate vision correction in the form of reading glasses or laser surgery to help us see.

When to Have Your Eyesight Checked

Improving your visual acuity with eye exercises may postpone the need for glasses, or strengthen your eyes for improved vision, so start by giving your eyes a break from eyestrain. If you experience any of these common problems, make an appointment with an eye professional:

• Headaches
• Blurred vision
• Double vision
• Eyes tearing
• Eye fatigue
• Urge to frequently cover or rub your eyes
