Important Notes on Ventilation

When building a structure intended as a work place, one thing to pay attention to is proper ventilation. Your basic white collar work environment might not require the same type of ventilation as a chemical processing plant, but the employees will certainly appreciate being kept cool during the hot days of summer, and proper heat distribution during the cold days of winter.

In this age of increasing worker safety, there cannot be enough said about proper ventilation in the work place.

Fans in the ventilation unit should be of a high quality - they will be constantly running at high speeds through out their life. Depending on their placement, ventilation fans can be several feet in diameter, or just a few inches wide. Main vent fans will be the biggest. Their job is to move large volumes of air out of a building. If an office building seems hot and stuffy, you know that their ventilation is not working properly. Stuffy, close offices make for uncomfortable workers, which makes for unproductive staff. Plus, any cleaning chemicals used will still be in the air when your employees come back in to work the next morning.

On the blue collar side of the coin, you will need better than adequate ventilation if you want your workers to be healthy and able to work on a daily basis, week in and week out. Without adequate ventilation, your workers in manufacturing, processing and other types of environments will be unable to perform to the best of their ability, and your productivity will decline exponentially. It costs more to train new workers than it does to keep your experienced workers healthy. With these situations, it is best to rely not only on overhead ventilation, but on floor ventilation fans as well. These fans should be placed at both ends of corridors and in smaller rooms, while ceiling fans should be placed in larger rooms. ceiling fans, however, should be turned so it draws air up, rather than pushing it down.

Restaurants require ventilation for a number of reasons, but there are three main reasons:

Patron Comfort - too much food smell from the kitchen means the customers will come out with their clothes smelling like food.
Safety - too much grease in the air causes a fire hazard.
Employee Comfort - kitchens get very hot and more fresh air from outside while the hot air gets a chance to vent out means the temperature remains stable inside.

Underground workers also especially need ventilation.

When working deep underground, it's entirely necessary to have good ventilation. The venting of methane gas is very important for keeping your workers safe and alive. Good ventilation is also essential in the case of fire in the heavy machinery that assist in the mining operations. A single belt fire can produce enough toxins to foul 10 thousand cubic feet of air if not vented out. Those toxins will cause serious illness or death to your workers.
