Identity theft in real estate is a crime which is picking up fast in Maryland in recent times. A person uses your name, address, Social Security Number, bank account number, credit card account, or other personal identifying information without your knowledge or permission.

This is “Identity Theft.” Identity theft is a serious crime which is difficult to deal with.

The thief will take utmost advantage of your belongings that are now in his possession. He or she may even mess with your bank accounts. You could lose out on good job opportunities and would be refrained from taking loans from the bank. There are chances that you may be arrested for the deeds you never committed.

The identity thieves adopt different tactics to rob you off your possessions such as—

• Stealing your wallet when you are unaware.

• Stealing your bank and credit card statements, mail, including, pre-approved credit offers, new checks, or tax information.

• A ‘Change of Address’ form is filled by the thieves and submitted to the Post Office to divert your mail to another location.

• They ransack your disposed materials, the trash of business or dumps to steal personal information from your home.

• They may disguise their identity and scam you by saying that they are from a well known company such as—Citi Bank, Bank of America etc. and tell you that there is a problem with your account

• They even hack organization’s computers.

• They misuse your name and buy cars, purchase a property or may even start a business under your name.

• File for bankruptcy under your name to be spared from debts that they have incurred.

• Give your name to the police and trap you in the legal issues.

Now, it becomes very important to prevent identity theft from taking place. For this you need to take a few steps to ensure that you are safe from real estate identity theft in Maryland. You must secure all your important documents in a safe place where others cannot access it, including family members and relatives, as they are the ones who make up most of all ‘known’ identity thieves. Shred all the receipts, copies of credit applications, insurance forms, physician’s statements, cheques and bank statements. Always carry your personal identification information with you. Keep your purse and wallet in a safe place. Track your account balance and activity electronically, at least once a week.

You can easily identify an ‘Identity theft’ when you find that your bills are not arriving on time. Follow up immediately with the creditors. Identity thefts in real estate in Maryland can be devastating, and the process of reestablishing your name can be overwhelming and costly.
