The introduction of the Hybrid automobile has allowed people to continue to drive on motorways, while contributing far less CO2 emissions than with a regular car.

Unfortunately, there still remain many myths and incorrect information regarding Hybrid car use and operation. Here are some of the most common myths surrounding the Hybrid car:

Myth #1 – Hybrid Cars Need to Be Plugged into an Electric Charge

According to several Hybrid car experts, this appears to be a common myth. Perhaps many of these people are thinking of some of the original electric cars, such as the GM-EV1, which used a plug to charge its battery. Hybrid cars, however, require no charging whatsoever.

Myth #2 – The Hybrid car battery generally lasts only two years

Wrong again. The Hybrid eco-friendly rechargeable NiMH batteries, unlike standard lead acid car batteries, usually come with an eight year warranty and are designed to last longer than most regular car batteries.

Myth #3 – Hybrid Cars receive over 80 miles per gallon of fuel (MPG)

Unfortunately not. The fuel economy ratings for hybrid cars on the motorway are slightly worse than the standard “fuel-only” counterparts. The average MPG rating for Hybrid cars, especially in the city, is approximately 30-40 MPG

Myth #4 – If You Run Out of fuel, You Can Run on the Electric Motor

Unfortunately, although considered the most environmentally friendly car on the motorway today, Hybrid cars rely on the fuel engine most of the time. Unless the fuel engine is on and charging the battery, the engine will completely shut-down. However, if your electric motor quits working, you still can use the fuel powered section of your car.

Myth #5 – Hybrid Cars will Save You Money No Matter What

Because demand for hybrid cars is extremely high, it is very difficult to save money on the price of a Hybrid car. If you are planning on buying a Hybrid Car, be prepared for slightly elevated car prices. The average price for the world’s most popular Hybrid, the Toyota Prius, is approximately 20,000 £.

Make Sure You’re Ready for Life with a Hybrid

• City Driving, not motorways. If you plan on driving on open motorways at high speeds, you will see little benefit to owning a Hybrid. The Hybrid is designed for urban driving in city centres.

• Waiting Lists. There is often a waiting list for Hybrid cars, so sign up today!

• Fuel Savings are not Immediate. Fuel savings can take several years to recoup for the additional cost of buying a hybrid vehicle. However, many would agree that you cannot put a price on helping contribute to a more environmentally sound planet.

Don’t Pay Congestion Charges in London!

Owners of alternative fuel vehicles (including hybrids) are exempt from paying the London Congestion Charge. This can mean big savings depending on how often you travel in Congestion Charging Zones.

Congestion Charging Zones are designated areas of London in which motorists must pay a daily fee (8 £ or 10 £, depending how quickly you pay) to drive or park between 7.00 am and 6.00 pm. Those who do not pay their fee face a Penalty Charge Notice of 100 £.

Driving an alternative fuel vehicle could make you eligible for discounts of up to 100%. To find out if your vehicle qualifies visit http://www.cclondon.com/exemptions.shtml and fill out an application.
