* Press 'R', when the 'Welcome to Setup' screen is displayed, to start the system in Recovery Console.

* Type 'map' and press the 'Enter' key. And note the drive letter given to the CD-ROM drive.

* Enter the following command in the command prompt and press the 'Enter' key.

expand drive:\i386\pci.sy_ c:\winnt\system32\drivers /y

Here,

drive: The drive letter of the CD-ROM

c: The drive on which Windows is installed

winnt: The folder in which Windows is installed

* When the file is copied, the following confirmatory message is displayed:

pci.sys

1 file(s) expanded.

Type 'exit' to quit Recovery Console and restart the system.

Perform an in-place upgrade to restore the file: If the previous method does not solve your problem, then you should try to reinstall Windows 2000. However, you may lose some of your customized settings. For this, you should perform the following steps:

Start the system using Windows 2000 CD.

Press the 'Enter' key to start the process to install a copy of Windows 2000.

Click 'Accept' to accept the License Agreement.

Press 'R' to start the Windows 2000 repair process. However, please note that this process takes the same time as the time taken during Windows fresh installation.
