Traditional notebooks offer better performing processors, more applications and the full computer experience, whereas netbooks use less powerful processors, run lighter-weight operating systems and just cannot handle all the applications that a fully powered notebook computer can.
The aforesaid confusion is further strengthened by new report from a market research company that further shows that about 60% consumers, who purchased a netbook, think that netbooks and laptops can do the same things.
However the report also find out that around 58% of consumers, who bought a netbook instead of a laptop said they were very satisfied with their purchase, as compared with 70% of consumers who had planned on buying a netbook all along.
Now, what are the parameters that decide the clear-cut definition of netbook or notebook?
Lets discuss the basic differences between netbook and notebook, which are summarized below:
Netbooks are generally smaller and weigh less than notebooks. Hence they are more convenient to carry and use on the go.
Netbooks usually have screen sizes of seven inches, nine inches or ten inches, whereas common screen sizes of notebooks are larger that is twelve, fourteen, fifteen, seventeen or even more.
Netbooks offer less power, memory and storage than notebooks, thus do not enable the same capabilities for running operating systems and applications. They generally have Windows XP or Linux operating system.
Netbooks (a portmanteau of the words Internet and notebook) are focused on internet centric tasks that are why they are called netbooks such as browsing the web, reading and writing e-mail or using web applications.
Netbooks can be used for more sophisticated tasks, but they will take more time compared to the more powerful notebooks, because of less powerful processor. For e.g., you could not use netbooks for editing or converting videos.
At present, there is no netbook that has a disc drive, so you cannot play CDs or watch DVDs on netbooks. However, you can play media from a Netbook's hard drive.
Netbooks are usually cheaper than notebooks. Prices range from about $350-$600.
Netbooks consume less power and therefore have a longer battery life than notebooks. Also, you can have either 3-celled or 6-celled battery as per the usage.
By late 2008, Netbooks had begun to take market share away from laptops. It is estimated that almost thirty times more netbooks were sold in 2008 (11.4 mn) than in 2007 (400,000).
After the release of the ASUSs Eee PC in late 2007, almost every major PC vendor HP, Sony, MSI, Toshiba, Acer, Dell have released competing models. Some companies even design them in different directions away from the original Eee PC and they got bigger, more powerful, more expensive and have even become luxury items.
