How Will I Know if my Ophthalmologist is Good?

Finding a good ophthalmologist can be difficult. Especially if you’re seeking to address vision problems for the first time or are considering LASIK surgery.

Many people have friends or family members who have had vision correction surgery and can give them a recommendation. But not everyone is so lucky, and you may be left looking for an ophthalmologist on your own.

How can you be sure an ophthalmologist has the experience and qualifications to provide you with optimal results? Take the time to do some research on prospective ophthalmologists before committing to a specific doctor or procedure.

Research Ophthalmologists Online

The Internet is a better resource than the phone book. The phone book will provide you with names, but will not give you pertinent background information about an eye doctor.

When you look at an ophthalmologist’s website, consider the procedural pages. If you are interested in learning about LASIK, look through all of their LASIK pages. Do they provide sufficient information? Are they honest about results and potential complications? Do they provide information about the types of LASIK procedures they offer with additional information about the technology they use?

After looking at procedural pages, look at your potential ophthalmologist’s “About Us” or “Bio” page. When researching a potential ophthalmologist’s background, look for:
• Education
• Post-graduate training and education
• Areas of specialization
• Professional affiliations
• Awards, honors, and recognition
This information can provide you with a clear idea of the ophthalmologist’s level of competency and his or her ability to provide you with optimal results.

Schedule a Consultation

If you are satisfied with the information offered on an ophthalmologist’s website, contact his or her office to schedule a consultation. Your first consultation will likely be free, and will give you a much better feeling about your decision.

During your initial consultation, make sure you are treated with individual attention. You should be treated like a person, not just another patient, and all of your concerns and questions should be sufficiently addressed. This consultation should provide you with detailed information about your options for vision correction.

Although a consultation will not include a detailed examination, it can give you an idea of the ophthalmologist’s approach and whether you feel the doctor is right for you.
