How tragedies can open our spiritual heart

If we pause for one moment and reflect on what it is that brings us lasting contentment we would be given many answers. But now let us look at those answers more closely.

Can we truly say if we look honestly at our answers for contentment that they are lasting and fulfilling, I think not? We as individuals particularly in the West have found for the most part contentment in outer realities.

Possessions, travel, success, relationships and wealth certainly give us a level of contentment or excitement, but there is something far deeper, a contentment that is undisturbed by fluctuations in our outer environment or circumstances.

That contentment is in the inner silence of our wise and pure nature. This unconditional virtue has always been with us, waiting silently for the moment when we through life's experiences, tragedies and disappointments are brought to an abrupt stop. At that time possibly for the first time in our lives we are aware that materialism mean very little to us when we are forced to look at what is truly important.

Generally at that time we find that family and friends their support and the good will of perfect strangers touches us in such a profound way. It is often a time of deep reflection helping us see how vulnerable we and others are.

We experience an expansion of our heart wishing in some way to be able to repay or at least assist others who are in need of support or assistance.

Out of this awakening we as individuals grow, grow in our awareness of the spiritual heart, the source of our inner contentment. Many will return to, deepen or discover a faith or religion in order to connect with the ultimate source of unconditional love and contentment, God.

And so through natural and personal disasters we as individuals are brought together in such a powerful and profound way. Many are then willing to further extend their hands in friendship, compassion and support for the needy. We see many volunteers assisting with humanitarian aid programs and offering support to numerous charitable organisations.

Many elderly people are the backbone of such programs, for they have often lost a loved-one and fully understand the need to be part of a broader global program that brings people together through support and love.

One can wonder why it takes such circumstances to bring people together, when the support and compassion within our heart is simply an extension of our own natural self-giving self. Unfortunately for the most we suffer from the limitations in our daily lives of the physical mind whose suspicions, doubts and fears often rob us of our divine inner capacities to show unconditional concern for others.

To bring a lasting change to the physical mind meditation and prayer gradually flood the mind with the heart's compassion and love. Then through an inner transformation we see the mind awakened to the fullness, beauty and selflessness of our spiritual heart, opening the way to fully express our self-giving nature on a daily basis.
