Not really. We’ve all watched dozens of bad videos, ones we are reluctant to watch again, but sometimes are forced to. Wouldn’t it be nice to have videos to watch that are concise, organized, relatively short and include necessary links and information OUTSIDE the video?
The how to of video marketing isn’t really all that complicated. The main thing is to put some thought into the video BEFORE you produce it.
The number one mistake most video marketers make is that their videos are too long and usually rambling. Some believe viewers will appreciate your jokes or turn of a phrase, so they make their videos a little more complex, which turns out to be a lot longer. Don’t make this mistake.
Most marketers are watching a video for one reason only: information, and NOT to be entertained. If they can smile and enjoy the process, great, but that’s NOT the reason they’re watching. So get that idea out of your head.
Videos should be no longer than five minutes, and under no circumstances longer than ten minutes. People simply don’t have the patience to watch a video any longer than that. If you have so much information that you need to go longer than then minutes, break your training up into a series of videos.
Before doing anything, make a short outline for your video. This includes writing a series of points you want to make. Start with an introduction, where it’s a good idea to grab your viewers attention. This is the one place where you can ramble a bit. Tell a story, use a quote or do something else to gain attention. After you’ve decided how you want to start, write down all the points you want to make. There should be at least three and no more than five. Get these points in your head. You don’t have to write a script, but you should have a general outline of what you want to do.
Then, practice a time or two. Your completed video should not be the first version you make. Figure out if the main points you are making flow from one to the other, or if they should be rearranged. Try to use some examples to illustrate your points, so you’ll be understood.
Don’t be afraid to repeat yourself, especially if it’s something connected to making you money. Repeat the web address several times if necessary, for example.
Make your video as mistake-free as possible. If something doesn’t work the first time, try it again.
Speak up, and make sure your microphone is working correctly. Nothing is worse than a video where you can’t understand what is being said. We’ve all seen those.
Once your video is complete, don’t be afraid to edit in some cover video. If you have a detached webcam, or a regular video camera, you can shoot your computer screen to illustrate a point you’re trying to make. A how to video about video cameras might include some video of a camera mounted on a tripod, for example. You might also consider videotaping someone else, and editing sound bites from them into your video. This is almost never done on the web, but it’s a technique you see all the time on TV. It certainly makes for a more informative video. Yes, it takes more work, but it’s worth it.
Finally, keep your title and summary simple, and if you mention links or other hard to remember information, write it down and distribute it with your video. You can also consider linking to that information, and including the link with the video for distribution. This way, people will be able to follow along and won’t necessarily have to go back and listen to your video again to get the information.
