How to Treat Cataracts

The natural lens of the eye is clear so light can pass through and be focused on the retina for clear vision. The lens can also adjust the focus of the eye allowing you to see objects clearly either far away or nearby.

The eye’s lens is made up of protein and water. The protein is dispersed around the lens to allow light to pass through it. The protein can begin to clump together as you age and cause clouding of the lens, known as a cataract. A cataract can grow larger and further affect your vision making it increasingly difficult to see.

Treatment for Cataracts
Early stages of cataracts can be improved with new prescription glasses or bifocals. Your ophthalmologist may suggest cataract surgery when your cataracts have progressed to the point that your vision is greatly impaired.

Cataract surgery can restore your vision and is a painless procedure. Most patients who have cataract surgery have results that are between 20/20 and 20/40 vision. Your ophthalmologist will explain the procedure in detail, describe what results you may expect, and answer all of your questions about cataracts and cataract surgery.

The Cataract Surgery Procedure
Cataract surgery replaces your eye’s clouded natural lens with an Intraocular Lens (IOL). An IOL is made of either silicone or acrylic and are safe and non-toxic. Many refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism can be corrected with IOLs as well.

During your cataract surgery, your ophthalmologist will administer a topical anesthetic to numb your eye. Once your eye is numb and you are comfortable, your ophthalmologist will place a tiny incision on each side of your eye. Ultrasound is used to disintegrate the clouded areas of your eye and then those areas are suctioned out of the eye. After the removal of the clouded areas, your ophthalmologist will replace your natural lens with an IOL.

Your vision will improve immediately and the incision will heal on its own. The full results of your cataract surgery will be noticeable a few days to a few weeks following the procedure. You can resume your everyday activities shortly after the procedure.
