Classic bedroom furniture is traditionally wooden. You will find a lot of antique pieces were made from richly-colored hardwoods like rosewood, walnut, mahogany and oak which were built to last. Commercially-made modern bedroom furniture is practical, functional items and often finished with wooden veneers to give them a polished wood look. Classic French or Italian furniture items are sometimes made out of wrought iron, which is sturdy and can be fashioned into pretty, ornate designs that look delicate and decorative.
Color
Classic bedroom furniture is characterized by dark colors, like deep burgundy red, dark brown and dark hunter green. If you would like to decorate with the look of the English countryside, consider the shabby chic look with distressed furniture in pastel shades. Subdued pastels like lavender, pale pink, eggshell blue and mint green will inject a little more character and enhance the white pieces.
Shape
Heavy wooden pieces in smooth or chunky geometric design were contrasted by classic French bedroom furniture that used sloping, delicate curves. Even heavier solid shapes of day beds and armoires were given feminine touches of scrolled feet and carved cabriole legs added timeless elegance and romance to these furniture pieces.
Detailing
Often you will find that classic bedroom furniture has breathtakingly beautiful hand-carved detailing. This ornate detailing is full of swirling hearts, curling vines and flowing organic shapes that set aside this style of furniture from modern pieces. Even home décor like mirrors and picture frames were adorned with similar detailing. Other common details include beveled carvings and cutouts to add depth and interest.
Accessories
To break away for the dark-stained, heavy pieces and add a light, airy feel to your bedroom, you can accessorize with smaller items. Mirrors are an excellent addition to your boudoir and will add a sense of space. Look for antique mirrors or frames with intricate carvings and scrolling in muted metallic shades or you can easily paint the wood to match the white or pastel colors of your bedroom furniture. You can also find Victorian pieces with beautiful antique green patina.
Creating a timeless look with your bedroom furniture is the ideal way to turn your bedroom into the sanctuary you’ve always wanted
