How to retrieve OBD Check Engine Light on Dodge Caravan

The check engine light of a car is designed to alert possible problems in one or more of the car systems. The first generation of on-board diagnostics (OBD I) used during the early 1980s on your Caravan, had a limited ability to monitor several number of circuits.

But, on-board diagnostic generation two (OBD 2) has grown into a more complex system.
The OBD 2 will activate the check engine light or malfunction indicator light (MIL) on your Caravan once a trouble has been detected and occurred more than once. If the light stays on, when you launch the car, the problem is not critical but should be repaired. A check engine light that stays on for a short period and then disappears might be an indication of an intermittent problem. But, if the computer system on your Caravan flashes this light during driving, it is alerting you of a critical problem that may damage your catalytic converter and need to be diagnosed right now.

New OBD 2 systems have the capacity to not only monitor a lot of circuits in different systems, but also can pinpoint the nature of the failure, the specific circuit and possible component that may be included in the failure. Your Caravan's computer uses an array of sensors and actuators through out the car to monitor and operate components. Once a sensor, actuator or circuit starts to run out of predetermined parameters, the computer's memory stores a code identifying the special failure and powers the check engine light on.

Retrieving Trouble Codes
When you see the check engine light on, you can retrieve the code(s) by connecting an OBD scan tool to the data link of the computer system of your car. Relying on the sophistication of the tool, you will not only know the error code, but the circuit where the failure occurred, the component in question, and, in some conditions, a series of values and instructions to troubleshoot the circuit or component. This may include testing a camshaft or crankshaft misalignment, fuel injector fault, catalyst monitor failure or power steering problems.

Trouble codes are alphanumeric values such as P 0540. The scan tool user manual or your car service manual will give help you identify this number and lead you to the nature of the failure on your Dodge Caravan.
