How to Reset the OBD Check Engine Light on a 2000 4Runner

As we know Car maintenance plays an important role in keeping the car running and out of the repair shop. The 2000 Toyota 4Runner comes equipped with an OBD 2 system diagnostic controller with a data link connector.

The connector can be connected to an OBD 2 code reader that will read OBD 2 trouble codes that the system diagnostic controller supplies. These codes correlate to different problems with the car. When the 2000 4Runner's engine light comes on, it shows that there is a problem with the 4Runner; generating an OBD 2 code to be read by an OBD 2 reader. The check engine light can also be reset with the OBD 2 reader.

You'll Need OBD 2 reader for this job.
Turn the car key to the "Off" position to make sure the 4Runner is completely off.
Find out the data link connector. On the 2000 4Runner, the data link connector is generally located just under the instrument panel in the driver side area, to the right of the steering column.

Link the OBD 2 reader connector to the data link connector. If the OBD 2 reader is self-powered, turn it on after making this connection.

Turn the key to the "On" position, but do not launch the 4Runner.

Follow the OBD 2 reader's instructions to clear existing trouble codes. Different scanners will have slightly different methods of doing this, from pressing an "Erase Codes" or similar button to going through menu options to do so. This step will reset the system diagnostic controller.

Unplug the OBD 2 reader from the data link connector when the reader has indicated that it is through erasing codes.

Launch the 4Runner to make sure the check engine light is no longer lit. If it persists, repeat the above processes. If it stays lit after repeating the steps, this could indicate a problem with the system diagnostic controller, you may ask mechanic for service.
