One of the automated backup tools is Microsoft Backup Utility. Every version of MS Windows operating system comes with Microsoft Backup Utility. This article describes the process of using the Microsoft Backup Utility in MS Windows XP. Execute the following steps to create backup of important data using Microsoft Backup Utility:

1. Click Start > Accessories > System Tools > Backup. The “Backup or Restore” dialog box appears.

2. Click the Next button and select the Backup files and settings option.

3. Click the Next button.

4. Select the Let me choose what to back up option and click the Next button.

5. Select the data that you want to backup and click the Next button.

6. Select the location to save the backup file.

7. Type a name for the backup file and click the Next button.

8. Click the Finish button. The software starts creating backup of the selected data.

When the software completes the process of creating backup, a .bkf file will be created at the selected location. You can anytime restore the .bkf file using the same Microsoft Backup Utility using which you have created the backup. However, sometimes it happens that .bkf file gets corrupt; therefore, when you try to restore the .bkf file, you get an error message.
