Consider a scenario wherein you upgrade your Windows 2000 system to Windows XP. However, when you start the system after the installation it fails to start. An error message is displayed, that is:
“Setup was unable to verify drive C:. Your computer may not have enough memory to examine the drive, or your Windows XP CD may contain some corrupted files.
To continue, press Enter.”
When you press Enter, the following error message may be displayed:
“Setup cannot access the CD containing the Windows XP installation files.”
Cause: There could be the following causes for the erroneous situation: The motherboard or BIOS may not be compatible with Windows XP.
The hard disk or the file system may be corrupt.
The Windows XP Setup CD may be damaged or contains some corrupted setup files.
Resolution: To resolve this situation, you should perform either of the following methods:
Check motherboard and BIOS compatibility: You should check whether the hardware is compatible with Windows XP using Windows XP Upgrade Advisor.
Verify the hard disk and file system: You should check if the hard disk and/or file system is not damaged by running chkdsk using the Recovery Console. If errors are found, then you should run fixboot or fixmbr to repair the repair the file system. Replace the Setup CD: You should use a different Windows XP setup CD, if it is corrupted.
However, if you still are not able to access your data then you need to use a third-party data recovery software to recover the data in a different system. Such data recovery tools are extremely safe in nature that do not overwrite the existing media while scanning. I will recommend Stellar Phoenix
