While the first section of this two-part article we discussed how leaving ample time to pack before your movers arrive allows you time to organize the items that you no longer want. In section two we will guide you on how to get rid of them.

The Classic Garage Sale

After you have gathered a pile of belongings that you will not be shipping, it is time to figure out how you can get rid of these items without sending them to the dumpster.

The first, and most common, way to get rid of these belongings is to have a classic yard or garage sale. You can setup a few tables in your driveway and display the items in an organized fashion. Create price tags to place next to each item or to make it easier, you can have a standard price for each table, with one table set aside for special bargain items.

Selling on the Web

If you would rather not sit outside all day waiting for people to show up, consider using online methods such as eBay.com or Craigslist.org. By selling items on these site you this can help pay for your long distance move.

The great thing about Craigslist is that it allows you to post items for sale in your city. If a buyer is from your area, they can pick it up directly from you, which will save you money on shipping.

Gift Giving Party

If yard sales and websites don’t sound fun, you can get rid of your items in a more entertaining method. Display your items throughout your house and invite friends, and family to your going away party. You can give your items away for free, pick names out of a hat, or any other method you can think of.

Make a Donation

There are many charities where you can donate your items instead of moving them long distance. If there aren’t any shelters in your area, contact Salvation Army, or Goodwill who have moving trucks and crew that can assist you.

Put It By The Curb

If all else fails, try placing your unwanted items near the road with a free sign. This tactic works best with furniture and exercise equipment.
