The moving day is here, and you have almost everything set, but how can you keep your kids occupied and involved in the move? Here are some great tips to help your children though the moving process.
During the day of your move, your family should work as a team to make the process easy and smooth. As your family gears up for a long day, you should keep in mind that it is very helpful to keep your kids busy by having them assist you with different tasks.
Make a task list for your kids, to help them stay involved and focused on the tasks as they work through the list. You may be surprised to find out that kids can stay focused and happy while doing their fair share of the packing and moving tasks.
Packing
If your moving company wont be doing the packing for you, the process of packing may be an emotional experience for you children, as they see their favorite objects vanish into boxes.
If your child asks, explain to them that their favorite items are just being packed away for a safe travel to your new home, and that they will see these items as soon as you arrive to your new location and unpack.
Your older children may not have a problem with seeing their items packed as they can grasp the concept of moving and understand that the situation is just a temporary one. They may, however, have a harder time saying goodbye to their friends.
Assistance from the Kids
Moving is a good chance to throw away things your kids don't want or need anymore. By getting rid of old items, you are reducing the volume and therefore reducing the price, and you get the change to make room for new things that you might buy after settling in.
A great moving day activity for your children is to mark the boxes with their items in it. Older children can mark their items by writing their name on the box, however, younger kids may need some special stickers or colored markers.
Keep in mind that when you pack the items to be shipped with your long distance movers, you will need to put some items on the side to take with you for the trip to the new location. These items on the side will also be used for the first few nights before the movers arrive for delivery.
