The age of your child should determine the approach you take when explaining why you have decided to move. Children that are a little older are more capable of grasping the importance of the move. They likely would be more tolerant, for example, toward the fact that grandma is getting old and needs attention.
Younger children, however, may have difficulties understanding the real reasons for the move. For example, it may be hard to explain why dad's promotion cannot be turned down. It is important, however, to provide them with good reasons for the move to make them an active part of it.
You should be prepared for a discussion and be ready for questions like, "Why can’t dad find a new job here?" Being honest is important to maintain your child’s confidence in you as a parent, so providing answers such as, "Because that's what we have decided" will not help ease their mind.
Visual Tools
Use as many tools as you can to help them feel involved in the move. Maps are great for older children. Use the maps to show where your family is moving, and together, try to find the new school, grocery store, parks, and other attractions. If you will be driving to your new home, draw the route together and plan the stops along the way. Remember, it should be an adventure, so don't just make it about getting there.
Pictures are better than maps when it comes to young children. Together you can flip through pictures of the new location so that they may relate to it more easily. If you will be moving to Los Angeles, for example, show them pictures of Universal Studios or the Los Angeles Zoo.
The Benefits of Your New Home
It is helpful to present the benefits of the move so your children will feel more excited about it. For example, if will be moving to a larger home, let them know that they will finally get their own bedroom, or if you are moving from an apartment to a house with a backyard, you may consider a pet.
