Your Little Helper
The first time you talk with your children about the moving process, be sure to let them know how they may be able to help. Let them know that the move is a family event and that everyone will be helping out. By showing your appreciation and having your kids take part in the move will help them get ready for it.
Understand that just like you, your kids will need some time to get used to the idea of moving. It might be helpful to give your children a timetable and explain how the moving process works. Let them know where you are in terms of finding a new home and how they could help in the process.
They should feel that their ideas are welcome, even if you are not able to always act on them. It is important for them to know that their feelings and opinions are respected.
Another great way to help your child through the moving process is to highlight how they will benefit from the move. As an example, do not just tell them that you are getting a better job in the new destination; instead tell them more of what they care about, such as moving to Los Angeles which is close to Disneyland, or perhaps moving closer to a relative.
Your child may have a hard time adjusting to such extreme changes, so try to show them the things that you know will be basically the same in their new home and community. You can provide your kids with a stable ground by telling them what is not going to change all that much and will still feel familiar to them. And if you have children that covet their “blankie,” be sure that they understand their favorite belongings will go with them, and that they can keep going to their favorite after school activities as well.
