Talk About the Move
It has been assumed for many years that the less time your children have to think about the upcoming move, the easier it will be for them. This approach, however, has changed in the last few years as experts now believe that children need time to get used to the idea of moving.
It is important to not postpone telling them. When you have made the final decision to move, take some time aside with your children and explain to them that the family is planning to move. Be thoughtful to their reaction and try to understand how they may perceive the situation.
Be Open to Questions
A child’s questions can be a very useful tool that will help you understand their excitement or uneasiness. By identifying and understanding how they feel in an early stage of the move, you will be able to help your kids feel more comfortable about it.
You do not need to feel obligated to answer all of their questions immediately, however, be sure to answer them when you can. Some questions may actually present an opportunity to get your children involved in the moving process, such as suggesting them to investigate the new community online, assuming they are old enough.
Your Attitude Will Influence
Your attitude towards the move will greatly influence your child, so if you yourself are uneasy about the move, it will seem uneasy to them as well. Try to be excited and positive about the upcoming move, and your children will be more likely to feel the same way.
