Adapt the theme for the event: Your starting point should always be the theme of your event. You can base your initial design for your invitation on this note. This should make your invitation an integral part of the overall experience of that event. With the banners, table cards, posters and other promotional materials following that theme, you should of course use it as well in the invitation. Just make sure to scale down the theme for the size of your invitation. Do not include all the motifs in the theme if it does not fit the invitations well and only use the font styles that are used in the event theme.
Keep the design simple: That being said, you have to keep the design simple and straightforward. In most cases, that black tie affair should already be well known by the people going. So you don't have to “attract” people in going to the event. You only need to remind them of the crucial information about the event by providing an invitation that is functional and easily read. So keep the design as simple as you can while following the event theme. You are not making a poster or business card, so print only the important information that a person may want to know. No more and no less.
Use a manageable invitation size: The next thing that you should decide on is the size of your invitation. For formal black tie events, people do not normally have big bags or purses. So that means, the bigger your invitations are the more of an inconvenience they will be. The best size invitations for formal events are small and easily handled ones. Anything from a small business card size, to a half letter sized invitation should do. The invitations should be easily stored in men's pants or breast pockets and women's petite bags. This should make it easier for people to bring the invitations while not being too much of a bother to carry.
Print in thick durable paper: Also, do not forget to print your invitations in thick and durable card stock or paper. Invitations can be exposed to a lot of environmental effects as it transits from person to person. With the invitation being the ticket or entrance stub for most formal occasions, it is important for it to last and not deteriorate until the time of the event comes. So make sure that you print invitations in the highest quality card stock as possible.
Do not forget some special elements: As a final note, you should also not forget to add in some special elements to your invitation printing. You can maybe have a gold ribbon attached to the invitation card, or maybe even other colored ribbons especially if it symbolizes something for the event. You can also try adding scents to the invitation as well as putting in glitters in the design and other sheen effects. These accents make the invitations extra special making them look very appealing and apt for the event.
With some luck you should now be able to create nice and professional looking print invitations for that formal event. Just follow the tips above and you should have no problems whatsoever.
