Using your knives safely is the number one priority you should have. So you don’t hurt yourself or others around you. Remember these tips to keep yourself and others safe. A sharp knife is much safer than a dull one, because it won’t slip as easily from the project you’re working on. Also the more practice and use of a knife will give the skills needed for safe handling. Skills are essential with the use of any tools.
* Cut away from your body, never towards yourself.
* Should you drop a knife, let it fall, don’t try to catch it. You can cut yourself.
* When handing a knife to someone, always close it first, or sheath it, set it on a table with handle towards the person, or give it handle first, making sure the person has a hold on it before letting go of it.
* Don’t use a knife for prying, it could cause the tip to break.
* Keep your knives sharp, cleaned and oiled lightly. They will last far longer and give you better results.
* Never run with an open knife in your hand, you could easily trip and cut yourself.
* Use a sharpening stone to sharpen your knife. Never use a power grinder, it will ruin the edge.
* Be aware of your surroundings, have a well lit work area.
* Stay focused on your task at hand, don’t be distracted by others.
* Use your dominant hand whenever using a knife.
* Don’t use a knife to cut electrical wires, use the correct tool for any job.
* Keep your knives sheathed or folded when carrying or not in use. Leather sheaths are not the best for storing knives for a long period of time, as the chemicals used in tanning them are corrosive for certain blade types.
* If you should happen to cut yourself, get first aid immediately.
