With summer fast approaching, everywhere you look people begin gearing up for that long awaited summer vacation. This is a time to relax, play and generally have fun. With gas prices soaring to record highs, the flight industry will see an influx of patronage to rival the past. With this increase, flight upgrades will be tough to grab this summer.
The first thing to try is checking with your travel agent when you begin making plans for your summer get away. Your agent may be able to list you as upgradeable when booking your arrangements. This may not always be the leap you need to get in the door, but it does show the airline employees that you are available to have your flight upgraded if the seat is available.
Another good way to get your flight upgrades is to book your flights during off peak hours. Business people usually fill up the good seats on the weekdays, making the first and last flights out filled to the brim. This leaves weekends fairly open. Compliment this by flying at odd hours. You may not enjoy having that red eye flight out, but if you are in first class you might not take to heart the inconvenience of having to fly in the early morning hours. This gives you a better chance for flight upgrades, especially in the summer months when everyone is trying to fly out to start their vacations.
Remember, when trying to get flight upgrades, to be as polite as possible. This always helps when dealing with airline employees. Get there early enough so that you aren't waiting in line with a long line of other people. If the employee feels that giving you your flight upgrades is going to cause a problem with all the other people in line, they probably won't offer it to you, even if they could.
If you are a frequent flyer, saving up those miles for the summer travel days might be the way to go if you can. Having those extra rewards can come in very handy when the time arises. Check to see if you are eligible for flight upgrades with your mileage programs, and whether or not you can use them this summer. You might be happy you saved them.
While these tips cannot guarantee that you will be awarded the flight upgrades you want, it can't hurt to try them. Be assured that these have worked for a significant number of people in the past.
