Premenstrual syndrome is actually a number of symptoms, varying in severity, that occur a week to ten days prior to the start of the menstrual period. Because of the telltale timing, we know it somehow relates to the hormonal changes our bodies go through during this time.

Causes of premenstrual syndrome are not clear so far and further studies are necessary. It is not sure that all symptoms are known by specialists because they are extremely numerous and depend on a variety of factors. It was believed that PMS is caused by hormonal changes, but it was proved that it isn't so and now experts try to make a connection between hormones, neurotransmitters and this syndrome. Since causes are still a mystery, treatment for PMS is hard to determine.

Treatment of PMS involves finding the remedy or combination of remedies that work for each individual. For some women, dietary changes, such as eliminating caffeine and alcohol, and cutting back on salt, will alleviate symptoms. Doctors often recommend vigorous, aerobic exercise because it is thought that exercise stimulates the body's release of various neurotransmitters, supplementing those that are at low levels.
