Consider your actual insurance needs
Quite often people get insurance policies without thinking too much about their actual insurance needs and reviewing the contents of the policy. You probably know that any auto insurance policy is a bundle of different coverage types, each of which can be adjusted and even dropped altogether (except third party liability insurance). Some coverage types may be simply useless, for example like collision and comprehensive coverage on an old vehicle that has little market value. Review your policy, analyze which coverage types you need and don't, and make the necessary adjustments - this will help to push down your insurance costs significantly.
Get all the discounts you can
Most insurance companies have different discounts to encourage their customers. They may be not as widely advertised, but it never hurts to ask, right? Some of the most widely spread discounts include low mileage discount, good driver discount, good student discount, driver's club member discount, multiple vehicle insurance discount, multiple insurance product discount, senior citizen discount and many others. You may also get a discount by improving the safety of your vehicle through the installation of additional safety features or anti-theft devices. Being a long-time customer with the same company may also give you better rates.
Make sure that your car is insurance friendly
The car you drive plays a very important role when it comes to determining the cost of insuring it. Fast sports cars, muscle cars, luxury vehicles, expensive rides, large SUVs - these types of vehicles will certainly drain your pocket not only because of their usually high gas mileage but also because auto insurance for such vehicles is quite expensive. If you want to keep your insurance expenses at a reasonable level the best option is to drive a mid-range sedan or family vehicle, which has good safety features, cheap repair and low theft rates. Insurance companies tend to offer much lower rates for such cars, so consider such a vehicle if you really want to keep your costs low.
Shop around
That's probably the easiest and most effective way of getting what you need in terms of auto insurance. By spending some time comparing insurance quotes you can find a very good policy with good coverage amounts and a reasonable price. Try getting at least three quotes from different providers before getting any particular policy. But in general, the more quotes you get, the higher are your chances of finding a great deal.
