How to Create a Pest-Free Working Environment

There can be a marked difference between commercial and residential pest programs when it comes to pest control. We usually put businesses, including office buildings, restaurants and warehouses, on a regular commercial pest control program. This is largely due to pest activity around sanitary issues, and can require monthly or even weekly service calls. In a residential area, however, quarterly or semi-annual service is usually enough.

Boston commercial pest control is an art. Here are the main commercial buildings we work with:

1. Office Buildings
In our experience, pest control in Boston office buildings, which often are very old, can be very difficult. A lot depends upon the actions of other owners who are nearby or in the same building, as well as their own sanitation and construction issues. With ongoing construction, that poses a separate problem. When you move any activity from one place to another, then you often find rodents or insects harboring in one area. When you open that area for construction, you disrupt that activity and they push it another area.

In addition, an individual office may not be aware of what is going on in another office space in the same building. Inspections and aggressive treatments are required in areas of active infestations, along with preventative services in adjacent office spaces.

2. Restaurants
Restaurants pose a specific concern due to the volume of food and supplies that are continually being brought into the facility. Sanitation is a very important factor in any restaurant or places where food is being dealt with. Treatments are generally at minimum, once per month, and it’s very common that they take place more often than that due to the volume of food that is being brought in.

Specific treatments can include thorough inspections, crack and crevice treatment to specific areas, perimeter spraying for preventative measures, and monitoring along with discussions of sanitation during each visit by a service technician. Structural elements in the building itself come into play as far as holes and cracks in the foundations are concerned, along with sealing pipe chases, screens and doors.

3. Warehouses
Because warehouses can have specific problems due to many openings for garage doors and loading platforms, they require exterior treatments with inspections for rodent control. Those areas have to be inspected on a regular basis, and rodent stations should be placed out adjacent to all openings. Generally, a log book would be kept for communication between the warehouse and the pest control company as to past and current pest activity. This log book would point out where special attention is warranted in specific areas for repair and sanitation.
