How to Choose the Best Console Tables

A console table forms an important piece of furniture in our living rooms. They are generally narrow and placed against a wall, usually in hallways and entryways.

They are used as a decorative accessory to display flowers or table lamps and as practical furniture that allows for mail, keys, a phone, and other small items you would find handy placed near the door. Some desk styles have a pull-out tray for writing quick notes and the tray can be pushed in when not in use.

Our choice and design of console tables should be based on their utility. If you are planning to use them simply for decoration to keep a flowerpot or plant, an antique vase or even an attractive lamp, use a sturdily-built console that can offer a stable base for these objects. On the other hand, a console table for practical purposes would probably have an ornamental hold-all tray on the tabletop that can keep small objects like keys and glasses organized and need not be overly built.

Since it is not meant for heavy objects, usually you find that the legs of a console table are thinner and more decorative when compared to other type of tables. If being used for decorative purposes, you can create a stunning impact by placing a mirror with an ornate frame behind the half-moon console table to reflect the light from a table lamp or even a gorgeous flower arrangement.

The most popular console tables are semi-circular, square or rectangular in shape and are supported on three or four legs. Depending on your overall interiors, you can choose the material. For example, a glass-top console table would be good with modern living room furniture. A wooden console table that has intricate carvings and decorative flourishes is a great choice to complement traditional or colonial living room furniture.

The height of the console tables should be at waist level and convenient enough for all members to have access to it. Also, while picking a console table, as with any living room furniture, keep in mind the level of maintenance and care it would need. Antique tables would need more care to prevent any damage from moisture or impact.
