Dissecting poetry was never one my favorite learning tasks in school. Maybe not yours either; however, all over the Internet, poets are learning from each other. Entry Way is not exception. Looking back on that English class now, there must have been a mystical foresight inside of me, because years later, I finally became that poet I dreamed of becoming. With the help of my publisher, VicToria Freudiger, we spent many an hour going through my poems. Sentence by sentence, taking the ideas separately in each one; it was made easier.
Another main factor is the rhyming. Will the poem rhyme on each sentence, or should it rhyme every other sentence? Is there a way that ideas or thoughts can be written in a format as though someone is talking in a general fashion? Prose is one form of writing without rhyming. This type of format can be considered storytelling without the paragraphs. This poet has a rhyming dictionary that is very dog-eared from constant use. It sounds out the vowels, and shows all the different words that rhyme with that sound. Such as the word ‘rhyme’, go to ‘yme’ in the book where it then takes you to ‘ime’ ah -- rhyme and time…excellent book and very handy.
Some writers have an uncanny sense of rhyming words and those words just flow into a rhyming format. For example, the other night in an email to my publisher, I got feeling silly and made some of the sentences rhyme. The words flowed for me, and it just came to mind easily. Rapping is a version of rhyming in musical format. For some people though, they can sit for hours looking at the paper or computer screen, only to find words failing them. Blank spots in the brain or brain freeze, as I call it. Get out that rhyming dictionary!
The following are some ideas for you to reflect upon: Writers should project their work at a specific audience base. What age group are the poems going to connect with? Are you writing for a younger audience of teens? Or is your audience built up of adults who have lived life and experienced what is being written.
Most people like poetry that is easy to read and understand. Gone are the days of Shakespeare and his ‘where for art thou’s of words in a bubbling pot of misunderstood words.
To become a writer in any genre, poetry, prose, fiction, biographical, there first must be the love to write. If you do not love writing, it probably will not work for you no matter how hard you try. Readers of today can tell when your passion is not real. Remember back in school when the teacher said an essay was due in few days, and you hated doing it. Same thing, you cannot hate to write.
Let the words flow for poetry, if they do not come easily to mind and frustration is forefront– then try a different style of writing. Maybe you could be the next Stephen King or Diana Gabaldon in the fiction world; but I can promise you no matter who you are – Entry Way Marketing and Publishing will care about you and they will help you to become a published writer. Along the way, it will also become apparent that they care about the books, the artists, the editors, the printers, the bindery companies, and well anyone that has to do with books. And yes, certainly that does include the bookstores.
