How To Be A Good Guitarist

Some tips on how to be unique and captivate audiences.

I was reading my guitar magazine. This person writing in had listened to this young band. He explained how the guitar player just couldn’t cut it. He had nasty tone, was restricted to the most basic pentatonic shapes, had bad string bending. He was not a skilled guitarist.

But this guy loved him! He said it ‘spoke to him’ and the music ‘transcended the abilities involved.’

Some guitarists, while sometimes not particularly masterful players, still have the power to captivate audiences. My best bet is that the guitarist that guy listened to was one of those. Guitarists like these normally learn things the wrong way or practise in more unorthodox methods.

I wouldn’t intentionally learn things the wrong way. But maybe next time you’re having trouble with the technique of a song, take some initiative and play it your own way. Or have a noodle with your guitar and be creative. It all helps to develop your own style and to be unique.
