How Much is the Recession Truly Affecting Job Creation and Unemployment?

No matter what news source you read, the fact that the economy is taking a toll on businesses and consumers seems to be a topic that is covered on a daily basis.

Every day, a new article is published about a lack of consumer confidence or a decline in small business optimism. Linked to these articles are statistics about the bleak job market, the need to layoff employees, and what to do about the new, impending recession. Dozens of articles are published from week to week providing advice to small business owners on how to prepare for inevitable financial chaos.

However, alongside these worrisome reports, many small business owners across the country have reported having their best year on record. In a New York Times Article entitled “Nervously Watching as the Economy Churns,” several small business owners were interviewed to find out what steps they are taking to prepare for the potential onset of a new economic recession. However, among these small business owners, at least one noted that some of the best months their businesses have ever had have taken place this year, including Jason Holstine, of the Amicus Green Building Center.

Furthermore, in a related article, The Times interviewed Elizabeth Lunney, the owner of a small business called ABC Language Exchange. In her responses, Lunney described what steps she would take if the economy did truly turn out to be as bad as some anticipate. However, in the same interview, she declares that, “So far, we’re having our best year ever.”

Is the economy really as bad as the news continues to point out? Is it possible that the lack of consumer confidence and small business optimism is due to the ongoing conversation about just how bad the economy is? Could it be the case that constant publications about how difficult it is to find work are holding some unemployed Americans back from even trying to find work in the first place? Many new technological start-ups have thrived in the past three years. Additionally, new methods of small business financing such as business cash advances have helped many small businesses grow and prosper. Perhaps this isn’t such a bad time for small businesses after all.
