So you’ve decided you want double glazing. But what is the best way to choose an installer? How do you make sure you get good value? And how do you make sure you that you get the best service available?

The first thing you have to do is your research. You need to find out what sort of windows that you want and what sort of double glazing is most suitable for your house and budget. Before you talk to any double glazing salesperson it is best to have a good idea of the types of double glazing and services available after all you really do not want to end up being talked into expensive fittings you don’t need. Also don’t be afraid to take advice from friends and family. Lots of people will have experience of the suppliers and installers in your area and will be able to help you, you want to make sure you get something that works with the character of your home and doesn’t reduce its value (we have all seen some really horrible double glazing installed in properties and you don’t want your home to end up looking like an eyesore). In fact word of mouth is one of the best ways to find a decent supplier. Have your neighbours recently had their windows done? If so, did their installers do a good job? Did they leave the property in good shape when they left? Did they show up when they said and get the work done on time? Was their salesperson easy to deal with? Was the firm up-front and honest about the price or did they end up spending more than they had been estimated?

The next step is to get a salesman to come and look at your property so that you can get some quotes. This is where the minefield starts. It is essential that you stick to your original desires and are not pressured into getting something you don’t want. There will be companies who come round and try and get you to decide what you want on the spot – always remember that if you have to sign up straight away the offer probably isn’t worth having.

Most good double glazing installers will be happy to show you some examples of their previous work. This is another good way of checking to see that they are reputable and do a good job.

One good way of ensuring that you get a decent price is to draw up a shortlist of suppliers – include those that your friends and family have recommended and then get in touch with each of them. Give each supplier the same brief and then wait for the quotes to come in. Sometimes it isn’t the cheapest one that you go for – it can be that you feel one firm is better than the other or you can develop a rapport that makes you feel happy about dealing with a company. Whatever you think is most important to you is the way forward.
