How Compression Garments Work
Compression garments work by applying pressure to the veins, muscles, and arteries in your leg. By putting pressure on large veins, compression garments redirect blood flow to smaller circulatory pathways, thereby increasing blood flow and reducing the blood pooling that contributes to varicose veins.
There are various types of compression garments. Depending on your needs and the extent of your varicose veins, your vein treatment doctor may recommend one of the following:
• Support pantyhose, knee-highs and knee socks: These may be effective at treating mild cases of varicose veins; the additional pressure can help relieve aching and swelling, and they are substantially less expensive than other options
• Store-bought compression stockings: These are often better for people with mild to moderate varicose veins; retail compression stockings are made with a strong elastic that helps apply even pressure and reduce swelling and discomfort
• Prescription compression stockings: These work well for varying degrees of varicose veins, from mild to severe; using gradient pressure, prescription compression stockings are the most effective type at increasing blood flow and reducing the discomfort of this often painful condition
Compression stockings are a good home treatment method for many cases of varicose veins, but compression garments alone may be insufficient to fully correct your problem.
Other Varicose Vein Treatments
In addition to compression garments, you may want to consider a vein treatment such as endovenous laser treatment or sclerotherapy.
These minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment options have been proven safe and effective at treating almost every instance of varicose veins. Talking with an endovascular specialist in your area can be beneficial in helping you determine what method or combination of methods will best meet your personal needs.
