A cancer misdiagnosis may occur because:
A thorough physical examination was not performed
Early warning signs and symptoms were not recognized
The patients complaints were not noticed or understood
Test results were read or interpreted improperly
Medical equipment was defective or malfunctioning
The patient was not referred to a specialist for further testing
Cancer screening tests were not offered or performed
The biopsy procedure missed a cancerous lesion
A non-cancerous ( benign) mass is diagnosed as cancerous (malignant)
A malignant tumor is detected as benign
There was miscommunication between the doctor and the laboratory
The physician failed to follow up and check on the patient
The results of a cancer misdiagnosis are life-altering and traumatic. These patients must undergo surgeries and procedures, and even start treatments like chemotherapy, enduring all of the side effects. Those who have been told they have cancer when they actually dont undergo these things unnecessarily. In many cases, these treatments actually lead to a serious decline in the overall health of individuals who would have otherwise continued to live their lives without cancer-treatment problems.
However, in most cases, it is someone whose cancer was overlooked. These people have been given a clean bill of health, or told they have another problem, but continue to suffer while the cancer rapidly metastasizes.
