Masses of party decorations, surplus pumpkin flesh, smoky fires and sugary treats don’t appear to add up to eco-friendly (or healthy) events when it comes to Halloween and bonfire night, but there are ways to get involved with these traditions without too great an environmental impact. Here we offer some suggestions on making your autumn celebrations a brighter shade of green.

Halloween is often a time of parties and of course trick-or-treating which usually involve dressing up and decorations. Try to think of ways to avoid wastage in this respect by considering hiring or buying second-hand costumes rather than buying something of a more throwaway nature. If you’re creative perhaps you could even trawl the charity shops for scrap material and make something unique!

With regards to trick-or-treating, try and use a reusable container for collecting treats and, if you are giving out the treats, perhaps offer organic and/or Fairtrade confectionery or even healthier alternatives. The same goes for the food at a party, where you can also be a little greener by using homemade or reusable decorations and non-disposable crockery and cutlery. And as for that excess pumpkin flesh, how about making a delicious pumpkin pie?!

Bonfire night can be an occasion for joining in the local community event, and in fact it is the greener option to attend an organised fire rather than adding to the smoke pollution by having your own fire. If you’re hosting a large event, consider alternatives to a traditional bonfire which are much more polluting than fireworks. With regards to food, the same suggestions as for Halloween should be considered and, at a large event in particular, ensure that recycling facilities are available.

Using these suggestions there is no reason why Halloween and bonfire night can’t be enjoyable events without the negative environmental impact.
