Tooth Replacement Options
There are a few different options available today for tooth replacement. These options differ in many ways, but when you are choosing one you will probably consider cost, effectiveness and appearance.
Tooth replacement options include:
• Dental bridges
• Dental implants
• Dentures
Dental bridges and implants offer more aesthetic and functional results then dentures. While dentures are a viable option for many people, they have a tendency to slip around, making eating and speaking difficult. Dentures also have to be cleaned regularly, which may or may not be easy to incorporate into your normal teeth cleaning routine.
Dental Implants vs. Dental Bridges
If you would like an alternative to dentures, you should consider dental bridges or implants. Both of these options are natural-looking and durable solutions to tooth loss.
Some of the advantages of dental implants include:
• Permanent when cared for properly and assuming no complications arise.
• You do not remove a dental implant; instead, you clean and care for it just like a natural tooth.
• Dental implants fuse to your jaw bone, creating a durable and secure foundation.
Although dental implants have many benefits, they can be a more expensive option and not everyone is a candidate for this option. You must have a sufficient amount of healthy jaw bone, and you must be a nonsmoker and have no existing medical conditions.
Dental bridges tend to be less expensive than dental implants.
A dental bridge is a false tooth attached to two dental crowns. The false tooth is placed in the gap left by the missing tooth, and the crowns are placed over the teeth on either side of the gap.
Dental bridges provide a stable chewing surface, and have a natural appearance. Bridges can be used to replace all of your teeth, or just a single missing tooth. Although less expensive than implants, dental bridges can still be costly. Partial dentures are a third option to replacing a missing tooth, and are often cost effective.
