House Training Your New Puppy

How to house train your puppy.

Depending on how long you work each day, how old the puppy is, and whether or not you have time to come home during the day, is how you should choose how you will potty train your puppy.

If you will be able to let the puppy out often and are set about it learning to go outside, you can choose to crate train it. On the other hand, if you can't let the pup out often, and are going to be gone all day, you can use a small room with linoleum or hard floor (in case the puppy has to go). Wal-Mart usually will have wooden gates for around $10.00. You can put a gate up in the area you want to keep them in while you are gone. Also put food, water, a bed, and puppy pads in the area. Our puppies at Yorkies Galore are trained to drink from water bottles (like the big ones for rabbits). You may choose to mount one on the gate while you aren't around. The water bottle is also convenient for the puppy to use when you are traveling. When you are home give them a water dish, as puppies naturally like to drink water by lapping it with their tongue.

Once you have everything set up for the puppy, you should make sure their feet do not touch the floor in the rest of the house, unless you are playing with them, until they consistently are going on the puppy pads. Once you get them to consistently go on the puppy pads, lift the gate.

If they have an accident in the rest of the house, put the gate back up and start over. The age of the puppy will have a lot to do with how fast they can catch on.

Once the puppy is trained to go on puppy pads, now you can train them to go outside as well. The next time you see the puppy heading to the puppy pad to go, pick them up and take them outside. Once they are outside sing, dance, give them a kiss, or give them a treat. Let them know how big of a deal it was that they went to the bathroom outside. Puppies do a lot better being praised for what they do right versus being scolded for doing something wrong.

Remember to always make the place you designated as their area available to always be their area. Once you lift the gate, the puppy will go back to the area because the puppy pads are in there, as well as their food, water and their bed. Dogs are den animals; they like to have their own area. When they get older, if you have a bunch of company, or after they have been playing with someone, and you don't see them, you will likely find them in their area on their bed or chewing on a toy. You will probably find them storing their toys in their area as well.

Housetraining your puppy may be the hardest part at first, but once you get it done, it will be done. Then they will become another little member of the family with their own routine doing what they do.

Remember to be kind and patient with your puppy. It will take time for them to learn to be housetrained.

They will get it!
