One of the best tips for keeping the kitchen spotless is to perform ongoing maintenance. Nothing makes house cleaning worse than leaving everything for a specific day. If you can do a little spot maintenance, it will make the big job that much easier. When it comes to the kitchen, that means scraping and rinsing all of the dishes immediately following each meal. For food that is stuck to the dishes, try soaking them in hot water and soap for an hour or so before commencing the rest of the cleaning. If you have a dishwasher, take the time to do a small pre-wash before putting those dishes in.
While you’re waiting for your dishes to soak thoroughly, take the time to wipe down the counters and any areas of the kitchen where stains may have appeared during the making of the meal. Clorox makes some good wipes that can be used for this purpose. Otherwise, a good spray and a paper towel will handle the job. As far as other preventative house cleaning goes, make a rotating list of the major appliances in the kitchen. The microwave, the oven, the refrigerator, etc. Once a week, hit the appliance that is due for that time. Clean it thoroughly, and then move on. This way, each of your appliances gets a thorough cleaning once a month.
The bathroom is just as easy to keep well maintained as the kitchen. Use a squeegee to wipe down the walls of the shower once or twice a week. This keeps soap scum and dirt from building up on the walls and getting into the crevices. Take the time once or twice a week to do a quick wipe down of the mirrors and the toilet. Keep a scrubbing brush handy for the toilet. Tank bleaches such as Toilet Duck and 2000 Flushes can aid in keeping the toilet bowl tidy automatically.
When it comes to the major once a week cleaning, start from the top and work your way to the bottom. The shower is the best place to start. Use a good cleansing spray and pay close attention to the sides and bottom of the tub. Make sure the water is draining out of the tub efficiently. Check the shower curtain to see if the liner is due to be replaced. Once done, move on to the toilet, and then finally to the floor. If you’ve been keeping it up on other days, the major house cleaning days won’t seem so major after all.
