Between daily errands, working, and everything else that comes with life, house cleaning often gets moved down the list of importance. When it starts to feel like it’s impossible to clean your house, it might be time to hire a person that is designated with this task.

We typically spread ourselves too thin with the hundreds of other things we need to do each day just to keep up. If it’s within your budget, you should definitely consider hiring someone to help clean your house so that you have one less thing to worry about all the time. Trying to find a reliable, trustworthy house cleaner can become a big ordeal. While almost anyone can clean a house, it should be known that not everyone is the best.

So, how do you go about finding that perfect house cleaner, and how you do keep them?

First of all, you’ll want to put the word out there that you’re looking. Some of the better ways to do this include newspaper ads, spreading the word among friends and neighbors, or trying a well-known cleaning service.

When advertising, always try to approach the immediate area first. Finding someone close by can help to ensure the person won’t have trouble making it to your house, and also that he or she knows the neighborhood well. An additional plus is that, when doing an interview, you can find out how well-established the person is in the community by asking how long they have lived there and how many neighbors know them personally.

Simply letting your friends know that you’re in the market to hire someone for house cleaning can turn into an instant referral. As long as you trust your friends to give you some reliable advice, you may be giving their current house cleaner some unforeseen business, which is always a plus in the service industry.

Cleaning services may be an option for you, as they have standard rates and quick completion times. However, if you don’t make sure you are clear about what you expect to be done, you may come home to less-than-expected service. The main reason why these services may not meet your expectations is because they often bring in a team and have the whole house done in 30 minutes, but sometimes less. This obviously leaves room for speculation that the job may not have been done well. Sometimes those businesses can get overbooked, which forces their staff to work with quantity in mind, not quality.

Once the right person or team is found, keeping him, her, or them may seem easy, but there are some key goals to set. Obviously, you want to lay out all of your expectations upfront, then discuss special tasks as they arise. Don’t micromanage, and don’t expect a duplicate of yourself that cleans just like you. Complaining about paper towels versus cleaning towels for the mirrors is going to land you back at square one, so pick your battles just like you would in a relationship, and it will be smooth sailing all year!
