Hotels: How they get rated

Hotels are ranked on the basis of the facilities provided by them. A hotel that offers fewer facilities will get less stars and a hotel that offers more facilities will get higher stars.

Stars are commonly used for classification in various industries. In the hospitality industry too stars are used to classify hotels. Generally, hotel can have one to five stars depending on the facilities they provide. Higher star ratings indicate that the hotels offer higher levels of luxury. The 5-star hotels offer higher level of luxuries than other categories like, 3 stars or 4 stars.

Because of exceptional level of luxury, some hotels are also termed as 6 stars or 7 stars. Generally they offer more facilities than 5 star hotels.

There are some independent bodies of hotel ranking who use diamonds instead of stars. For example they will not call a hotel as a 5 star hotel or so. On the contrary, they will say it as 5 diamond hotel.

Most of the times, the smaller hotels face lots of problems to get a higher star Ranking, because to get a higher ranking like 5 star hotels, they need to have all the luxury facilities. For example if a hotel does not have elevator in spite of having all the ultra modern facilities, it will not be regarded as a 5 star hotel. The hotels need to go through various assessment procedures for getting 5 star hotels ranking.

In some countries, there are official bodies to give ranking to the hotels as 4 star hotels, 5 star hotels etc. But in many countries, the ranking system is unofficial and there are various authorities and associations for ranking hotels. That’s why there is no uniformity in hotel ranking, a hotel may be ranked as 5 star hotels at particular place, but in a different country, it may not be regarded as a 5 star hotel. It can also very depending on the certification authority.

Recently an effort has been made for creating a uniform body for ranking the hotels to maintain a ranking standard through out the world.
