In men, the process of hair thinning or baldness involves changes in the hormones and aging. This process is better known as male-pattern baldness, which along with aging, specifically involves the testosterone (one of the primary male hormones).
In men, testosterone is produced in abundance; more so during puberty since these hormones are the ones that develop secondary sex characteristics such as bigger muscles, growth of pubic hair, and deepening of voice. When acted upon by 5-alpha reductase enzymes, testosterone is converted into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Although this by-product is only 7 percent of testosterone, it still follows that an increase in testosterone likewise increases the formation of DHT.
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is known to negatively affect the hair follicles of the scalp. Buildup of DHT in the scalp causes the hair follicles to miniaturize (shrink). After hair is being naturally shed, the miniaturized hair follicles can—if able to grow any—only produce strands that are shorter, thinner, and colorless. The hair follicles weakened by DHT are made incapable of growing healthy strands, hence causing thinning hair and hair loss in men.
In women, testosterone is also produced, but not in the same abundance as in men. Testosterone in the female body is also converted to DHT, but is less prone to cause hair loss in women due to the protective effects of estrogens (primary female hormones) and progesterone. DHT is capable of damaging the hair follicles, however, if there is a fluctuation or significant decrease of a woman’s estrogen levels.
Hair loss in women and men is quite an intriguing gradual process, with minute internal physiological factors involved. The transformation of hair from being with color, with volume, well-pigmented, and thick to being colorless, thinner, shorter, and unhealthy is a gradual occurrence on the scalp. Baring of the scalp in diffused areas of the head is the start of hair loss in women; as for men, it is a receding hairline.
