Holi- A celebration for Unity among people

The second most celebrated festivals in India is Holi. This unique festival of colors involve seasonal change that is spring and several cultural occurrences. There are numerous Hindu mythological stories related with the celebration among which Holika Prahlad, Krishna Radha as well as Kamadeva legends are most prominent.

Holi is the only festival that is awaited as it employs immense joy and play. It is particularly known across the country and worldwide for its vibrant colors, music, dance and mirth. This day people enjoy full freedom of a democratic country where they can hurl colors, water balloons, or pass comment to each other and even to unknown people (passerby) irrespective of their castes, religion or creed. So it is celebrated forgetting all social taboos that generally bifurcate one from another.

The festival is celebrated for two consecutive days, which begins with Holika dahan or burning of fire and followed by playing with colors next day. Singing and dancing on folk songs and bhangra beats are very common on this day. In some places, it's exists for 3 days involving choti (small) and badi (big) Holi after bonfire.

Its grandeur could be seen best in Vrindavan and Mathura, which is the birth place of Lord Krishna. Brij ki Holi of this place is talked a lot everywhere. In the same way, Braj Mahatsova of Rajasthan and Basant Mahotsav of West Bengal are also very popular worldwide. Another important feature of the celebration is sharing of gifts. Like any common festival, people love to gift Holi colors, Holi sweets, dry fruits, gujjiyas, handy pichkaris, apparel Holi sprays & gulals etc to each-other.
