Hiring the Right Handyman for the Job

Hiring the right handyman for the job can be a daunting task, especially if you’ll be doing all of the background checking by yourself. Some customers prefer to hire a company that does all of this for them, but others prefer to work one-on-one with someone working independently.

Taylor, the Independent Handyman

There are several reasons you might elect to hire Taylor instead of a company. For example, an independent contractor is likely to have competitive rates, so once you’ve tracked down the person most suited for the job, your budget will thank you. The hourly rates one person charges are going to be more modest than those of a company that gives workers health insurance, paid time off, and other benefits – they have to make up for those features somehow!

The next plus with Taylor is that he (or she) answers only to him/herself. There isn’t a company dictating the rules, what can and can’t be done, and such limitations. Sometimes this is viewed as a disadvantage because companies have regulated every procedure and made everything “safe”, but an upside to Taylor’s services is that he/she can give free estimates whenever desired. Often, the private workers give more personalized service in addition to advice about maintaining your house and taking extra care to make sure the job is done right the first time.

Some other distinct advantages to hiring an independent handyman include reputation maintenance, appreciation of past work, detailed estimates, and upfront honesty. Obviously, one person has more work to do when protecting a reputation than does a company that gets a big-headed ego about how much business they generate. One person doesn’t matter as much as the majority in terms of bad business, but what if that person is you? Any established person like Taylor is going to strive for the best possible referrals with every job because they can be used for updating the resume and reference list.

The Company

Sometimes it’s better to hire a company of handymen because of time constraints and size of the job. While the independent handyman may be able to conquer any job put before him/her, it will be hard to beat a team in terms of completion time. Some more big advantages are that all of the background information is already researched (including a hefty amount of required experience), and a company will be licensed and insured for those larger projects. Most of the time, the job will be done with a guarantee on the work and the timeliness of employees.

Be sure to ask the company and others that you know that have used it about how estimates are done (sometimes they’re not free, and only over-the-phone general assessments will be made).

The main point with hiring any handyman is to take the time to carefully assess what needs to be done and how much time you’re willing to allow that part of the house to stay incomplete. Once these elements have been calculated, it will be much easier to make a decision regarding the choice of independent or company service.
