The question to ask yourself as you look at your appliances which probably at minimum include a washer and dryer and maybe a full size double door refrigerator and a deep chest freezer, do you want to move these things yourself or do you want someone else to do it? Plus you will likely have furniture, beds, dressers, tables and chairs to add to the list and that’s just the beginning. You probably don’t even realize how much stuff you own until you are faced with the prospect of moving it.

It’s usually at this point that most potential movers decide to have a garage sale and go through their homes with a fine tooth comb to ferret out everything that can be disposed of. Once you par it down as much as you can, you probably realize that you still have things to pack and furniture to heft.

It’s at this point that hiring a moving company to do the moving for you becomes increasingly appealing. If you’re at this point, and you have started to look for a moving company here are some tips to make the process easier.

The first rule of thumb is to avoid the temptation to hire day help and go for a professional movers company. Yes it may seem cheaper to hire a few guys off the street who may or may not know what they are doing but do you really want to trust your property to a couple of guys off the street? The whole point of moving is to get your stuff from point A to point B and preferably in the same condition.

The next step is to find a reputable, established moving company. Ask around for referrals from friends or co workers, who may have used the services of a mover recently and can give you a referral.

Ideally you have planned this move out so well that you are well ahead of your anticipated move date and you can take your time to do some research and get at least three moving bids in writing. Your end price is going to vary by how much you have to move and if you have specialty items like a piano, grandfather clock or waterbed to contend with that will take extra resources to move. Other factors that affect price include how far you plan to move and how much do you want the movers to do. You can have the movers do it all- pack everything in boxes, and load and unload the truck or you can just have them load and unload items that you have already boxed up.

Once you get your bids and make your selection, the rest should be fairly easy and you should be well on your way to a successful and pain free move.
