It is important to ask questions and make an educated decision.

You should only hire a plumbing contractor who has been in business for at least 6 to 10 years. If the plumber is experienced and knowledgeable, you will have a better experience and save a lot of money.

Find out if the plumbing contractor is insured and licensed, and keep in mind that only some states require a license. If a license is required in your state, make sure the plumber's license is current and check to see if any complaints have been filed against it. Additionally, you should only hire a contractor who carries at least $500,000 in liability coverage and workers' compensation insurance.

Bear in mind that plumbers either charge by the project or hour. The average hourly rate ranges from $75-$165, depending on your location. Some plumbers also charge time and a half for weekend and after hour calls. Keep in mind that additional fees may apply. For instance, if the contractor has to cut through your ceilings to get to a leak, he may charge you more for the work. You can expect to pay about $70 per hour for fixing the drain lines and $120 per hour for sewer lines. For basic services like installing new traps and leak repairs, you will pay $45 to $60 per hour. Some plumbers also charge for the drive to and from your location, picking up parts and the like. You may be able to get a rough estimate over the phone with some contractors, but some require that you meet with them in person.

When the plumber provides you with a quote for the work, make sure you he gives you a written estimate. The written estimate should include a list of materials, payment terms, and any additional agreements that pertain to the project.

Check to see if the plumber offers a guarantee for the work. If he fixes a plumbing problem for you and the problem returns, will he fix it for free? You should never hire a contractor who does not offer a guarantee.

Make sure you only hire a plumber that makes you feel comfortable. A simple mistake can leave you with thousands of dollars in damage, lost time, and lawsuits, so you should hire the best person for the job. The truth is that a plumber's job is not easy. It requires plenty of knowledge, training, and experience.

Plumbing problems usually occur at the wrong time, and most people will need to hire a professional eventually. Taking the time to search for a quality plumbing contractor is very important because it will save you stress, time, and money.
