There are many reasons that a home may be undergoing construction. These reasons may vary from simple aging issues that affect the cosmetics to significant structural changes. No matter the reason for construction, it is always best to consult with a professional prior to starting any work. There will be prep work that needs to be completed, as well as permits that need to be secured. A contractor will be able to do all of this leg work.

Why Not Do It Yourself?
A do-it-yourselfer may feel as if the project is something that can be accomplished in a weekend, it is only after they rip out the kitchen cabinets that they discover that the dishwasher has been leaking. Now it is not only the cabinets that are in need of repair, but also the wall, flooring and possibly even the studs, depending on how long the slow leak had been active. A contractor can not only provide fixes to these issues, he may be able to use telltale clues to inform you of these types of problems prior to the start of the project.

Who Should I Hire?
A good contractor is not one with the lowest—or highest—bid. He is not pushy. He does not treat clients as if they are an inconvenience. He is a person of integrity who has the customer’s satisfaction on the forefront of his mind. He will provide a plausible and factual answer when you have a question. You should be sure to ask questions regarding the project at hand as well as some other pertinent questions such as; "Are you fully insured?", "Are you licensed (where required)?" and finally, "Do you have references?"

Why Do I Need to Ask Questions?—or—Can’t I Just Hire the Cheapest Bidder?
There are many reasons that the homeowner should make sure that the professional they hire is not only fair, but also reputable. This is a person that you will be entrusting with your home. You want to know that the job will be done with punctuality and respect. As a homeowner you also want to be sure that the project is performed in the best possible manner with quality products and lasting results. There is no reason to pay the lowest bidder once, then have the work redone by the better contractor due to the mistakes and mishaps that the first one left. There is a capable professional that is ready and willing to take on your project, the matter the size or complexity.
