Resolution Methods
Method 1
We can try to visit the Microsoft Update Website in an Administrator user account. Please do not visit the Website in a Standard or non-Admin user. Follow below steps to check your user account status,
1. Launch the Start Menu and click Control Panel to open it.
2. Double click the icon named 'User Accounts'.
3. It will show the list of users. Check whether your username is marked as Standard or Administrator.
4. If it is standard then log off and login with the Administrator user account.
5. Launch the Internet Explorer when you are logged in with the Administrator user account.
6. Go to the Tools Menu and Click Windows Update. If the Menu bar is hidden then press and hold ALT key for a second.
TIP: You can also visit update.microsoft.com.
7. When you visit the Microsoft Update Website then it first attempts to install the latest Windows software. May be you will see a prompt on the top for allowing an add-on to run. Please allow all the add-ons to run and follow on-screen instructions to complete this installation.
If there is no prompt or you simply see an error message then perform the steps mentioned in the following method.
Method 2
1. Download the latest version of Windows Update Agent for your Windows XP. You can do a search on Microsoft Support Website (support.microsoft.com) for it.

3. Right click the 'Command Prompt' and select 'Run as Administrator'.
4. Enter the login credentials of Administrator user, if prompted.
