Helping you to fix Windows Update issue on XP

Few users often face the Windows Update issue especially after repairing Windows XP from the disc, after installing Windows XP SP2 with clean installation, or after installing Service Pack 3. You can try to visit the Microsoft Update Website to install the latest Update software.

After Windows 98, the Windows XP is considered as the most stable Operating System from Microsoft Corp. A lot of users, from all around the world, are still happily running their systems on XP. But the users often face issues with it, especially the Windows Update issues. If you are also a victim of Update issue in Windows XP then we are here to help you out. Defining the issue

The user is not able to download the updates from Automatic Updates in Control Panel, Windows Update in the system tray, or by visiting Microsoft Update Website. Mostly the issue occurs in following situations

• After repairing the Windows XP installation using XP Disc,

• After performing the clean installation of Windows XP SP2, or

• After installing Windows XP Service Pack 3

Reason

This issue occurs because the System Registry entries or System files related to Windows Update got corrupted.

Resolution Methods

Method 1

We can try to visit the Microsoft Update Website in an Administrator user account. Please do not visit the Website in a Standard or non-Admin user. Follow below steps to check your user account status,

1. Launch the Start Menu and click Control Panel to open it.

2. Double click the icon named 'User Accounts'.

3. It will show the list of users. Check whether your username is marked as Standard or Administrator.

4. If it is standard then log off and login with the Administrator user account.

5. Launch the Internet Explorer when you are logged in with the Administrator user account.

6. Go to the Tools Menu and Click Windows Update. If the Menu bar is hidden then press and hold ALT key for a second.

TIP: You can also visit update.microsoft.com.

7. When you visit the Microsoft Update Website then it first attempts to install the latest Windows software. May be you will see a prompt on the top for allowing an add-on to run. Please allow all the add-ons to run and follow on-screen instructions to complete this installation.

If there is no prompt or you simply see an error message then perform the steps mentioned in the following method.

Method 2

1. Download the latest version of Windows Update Agent for your Windows XP. You can do a search on Microsoft Support Website (support.microsoft.com) for it.

2. Launch Start Menu, point to All Programs and then go to the Accessories.

3. Right click the 'Command Prompt' and select 'Run as Administrator'.

4. Enter the login credentials of Administrator user, if prompted.

5. Type the below mentioned command and press Enter.

regsvr32 wups2.dll

6. Click on OK button for any confirmation message. This will register the wups2.dll command.

Now, go to the Control Panel and launch Automatic Updates or visit Microsoft Update Website. If you are still not able to update the Windows XP then immediately contact Microsoft Windows XP Support.
