We’ve heard about global warming,. We’re concerned about the ozone layer. Of course we want our environment to be a safer place for our children and their children! But where can we start? We’re quick to place blame on smog, on cars, on pollution but what about our own homes and our own backyards?

Since 1950 at least 70,000 new chemical compounds have been invented and dispersed into our environment and many of them we bring into our homes. We are essentially conducting a massive clinical toxicology trial on ourselves and our families. The Environmental Protection Agency indicates that the number of chemicals used inside the home has more than doubled since 1950.

You don’t have to look far to find products in your home that could be slowly poisoning yourself and your family. Products that contain toxic chemicals include dishwashing detergents, household cleaners, oven cleaners, laundry detergents, bleach products, shampoos and deodorants. Of course that’s only to name a few. We get poisoned in several ways which include ingestion (accidental poisonings), inhalation (every time we use the product) and absorption through the skin.

What are the results? Well a 1989 State of Massachusetts Study tells us that “50% of all illness is due to poor indoor air quality”. Let me break it down further:
1 person in 3 has allergies severe enough to be treated by a doctor.
1 person in 10 suffers from migraine headaches or blood pressure.
“70% of cancers are triggered by exposure to hazardous substances in our environment” Toxic Substances Strategy Committee.

Women who work in the home have a 55% higher death rate from cancer than women who work outside of the home according to a 17 year EPA study.

Asthma has tripled in the past 20 years.
According the National Cancer Institute, “incidence of lung cancer has increased 364% despite the fact that smoking has declined in the general population”.

Poisoning takes place slowly...over a period of time. Once damage has been done to the organs by environmental chemicals, it frequently cannot be repaired or corrected once the injury has occurred. Prevention is therefore essential. So yes, you are concerned about the environment, but what part are you playing to help. What part are you playing to make your home safer for you and your family?
