So maybe you’ve been trying to sell your car lately, but it just won’t seem to sell. People have been calling, but you’ve got no takers. Or worse, maybe people haven’t even been calling at all.
When it comes down to it, some used cars are very easy to sell, while others are a real pain. If you’re trying to sell your car, whether privately or to a dealer, there are a few questions to ask yourself once some time has passed and the car still hasn’t sold.
Make Sure Enough People Know Your Car is for Sale
In order to sell your car, people need to first be aware that it’s available for sale. The more people know that your car is for sale, the better your chances. So, if you’ve been trying to sell your car for several days with no success, you’ll want to reevaluate your marketing strategy.
How are You Getting the Word Out About Your Car for Sale?
If your car is listed in the local newspaper and nobody has called, you may want to extend your advertising reach by listing the car in other newspapers, online classifieds, auction sites or even relevant car enthusiast forums. (Warning: many of these placements will cost money and the fees do add up fast).
Re-Evaluate Your Car For-Sale Ads
So let’s say you’re already advertising your car for sale in several newspapers, online sites, and by posting flyers around town. Still no bites?! It’s time to reevaluate your car for sale ads.
Ask yourself these questions:
• Is the price and mileage of the car included in your for sale ad, along with all other key information? Make sure you include all the important info about the car you are trying to sell which a prospective car buyer would want to know. Many used car shoppers will skip an ad all together if it doesn’t contain key information.
• And what about photos of the car for sale? Surely, if you’ve listed your car for sale online or in a classifieds where photos are allowed, you’ll want to include good, flattering pictures of the vehicle.
Rethink the Asking Price for Your Car
If you’re having trouble selling your used car, or even generating any good interest, you may want to rethink the car’s asking price. Remember, used cars are only worth what someone is willing to pay. Just because Kelley Blue Book says your car is worth a certain amount does not mean people will actually pay it. (More on this in my recent article, Why Kelley Blue Book Values Can be Misleading).
Once you’ve determined that the original asking price for the car for sale may be a bit steep, you can begin lowering the price.
