Many companies think that just paying their people more money will improve morale. This is, however, not exactly the case. A series of rewards for good work or good behavior goes a long way towards improving morale, whereas a work environment where everyone's always getting "the stick" so to speak, for trivial things will cause more people in the work place to want to rebel, to hate their job, and look for ways to bring productivity down, whether consciously or sub-consciously.
In these times of economic hard ships, people will not just quit a job if they already have one just because they're unhappy there. We all need to work together to make working a pleasant experience. Lately, there has been talk about job dissatisfaction stemming from employees perceiving their managers as "distant" and "too busy" to talk to them about issues they may be having. Now, you may need to work out within your company the best ways to address these kinds of issues, but it's recommended that you take care of it so people don't feel isolated at the job. Understand that you hired human beings, and that human beings are social creatures. Humans don't like to feel completely isolated from everyone and they will trust someone who's willing to communicate and work with them on issues over someone who simply barks out orders and refuses to take any input.
And what exactly does happiness have to do with production? A happy team of employees, like the ones at Lonsdale Packaging in Lonsdale, Minnesota, will get the job done correctly the first time! These people are concerned about the quality of their work because they feel it reflects upon them as individuals, so any mistakes feel very personal. This kind of attitude leads to people being more careful with their work, as they develop a sense of pride for a job well done.
A factory-style work environment like the one found at the Lonsdale Packaging facility benefits greatly from improved morale in the work force. These people see shipments from around the country come in every day, and diligently re-package it for distribution to retail outlets across the nation!
So, next time you're considering a "funny hat day" or something to improve morale, try instead to listen to the people and see what they would suggest! People usually know better how to improve their own morale than you would.
