How often do you think to yourself, “I wish I had the tools and know-how to do that” when approaching a project to fix up a certain part of your house? It’s understandable to put chores off when you’re too busy, but maybe it’s time to find someone to help out, especially when you know it’s highly likely that it won’t get done anytime soon if left up to you.

It’s way too stereotypical to brand handymen with the label of “ex-convict that wants to overcharge for everything,” as it’s no longer a reflection of the majority. Many of these hired hands are hard-working, experienced in many skill areas and very honest. Now that the stereotypes are out of the way, let’s get to work on finding a respectable handyman.

Remember to check the state laws on contractor’s licenses, because not every state requires a worker to have a contractor’s license for minor repairs, including yard work, painting and other small jobs. You’ll also want to ask the prospects to provide proof of liability and workers compensation insurance. Why insurance? If a handyman is injured on your property, you could be stuck with the medical bills. Also, it is possible that you could be paying indefinite liability if the handyman is plagued with long-lasting injuries.

References are a highly valuable resource for checking reliability and establishment as a skilled worker. The standard suggestion of 3 references should be fine, but do be aware that 1 (or all 3) of them could be a family member. If you specifically want past customers’ numbers, you should make that clear to the applicants. The last obvious step in the reference process is actually contacting them, as this step can really make a difference in how much you trust a potential handyman.

Another option for finding skilled help is to ask for referrals from friends and neighbors. Keep an eye on neighbors that have recently had work done to the house and ask them if they think the handyman they hired did a good job. If so, you’ve saved yourself some trouble.

The last option recommended is to put an ad in the newspaper. Most handymen check these frequently, because they know that some people consider it as the main means for finding help with house projects.

As with other services like house cleaning and yard work, you should make sure that the people that apply have some kind of background in the main area of your project. Many of the workers will be upfront, but those desperate for money may be tempted to lie in order to get paid. Giving honesty will often return honesty, so being upfront with the helper can drastically improve the relationship.
